MATERIALS & TOOLS -- Phase One & Phase Two

  • 4 or 5 sheets 22" x 28" poster board

  • 2 sheets 8.5" x 11" plain white or grid-type paper

  • pencil, pen and/or thin-tipped magic markers

  • ruler

  • scissor

  • several dozen paper clips

  • good quality "tacky" glue

  • several dozen "clothespin type" utility clips

  • 10 Popsicle sticks, each 5" to 6" long.

Step #1 -- Read ALL the directions on this page before actually doing anything. Get a clear picture of what you are going to build. Then gather your materials. The kind of cardboard you choose is important. It must be fairly stiff yet thin-ish and "creaseable." We recommend poster board but other materials could work. We also recommend Aleene's Tacky Glue because it is easy to work with, gives a strong bond and generally doesn't drip. And about the "utility clips," these are smaller than standard clothespins and grip much closer to the tip. We generally find them in the "laundry department" of drug stores, dollar stores, or shopping-marts.

Step #2 -- On plain white paper, draw the two patterns shown below using exact dimensions:

Pattern "X"

E = 3 7/8"

D = 3  3/4"

Top to Bottom at Centerline = 6 1/2"

Pattern "Y"

B, C, F = 3 1/2"

A = 3"

D = 3 3/4"

Top to Bottom at Centerline = 5 3/8"

Step #3 -- Before cutting out panel patterns, add 1/2" around the edges and miter the corners.
Then Trace your patterns onto poster board.

Make 10 "X" panels and 30 "Y" panels.

Step #4 -- After you have them marked, cut them out.

Step #5 -- Fold the seam edges back on your paper patterns.

NOTE: Make sure to slice the seam edge on all three sides where the points of the inner triangle meet the lines of the outside edge.

BE AWARE the outside edges of overall triangle will NOT be straight. That is, each edge of each sub-triangle is straight, but when measured and diagramed properly each outside edge of the overall triangle is (just a tiny bit) convexly bowed.

As shown at right, use your (edge-folded) paper patterns to transfer the outline of the overall triangle to each of your poster board panels. Mark and slice the border of each panel, just as you did with the pattern.

When all 40 of your poster board panels are cut-out, marked and sliced correctly, you are ready for....

Step #6 -- "Crease and fold."

For the 7th and final step of Phase One, use paperclips to temporarily secure the seam-edges of your panels together. DO NOT GLUE THEM YET. Just get a feel for how they fit. Pay close attention to the way the position of the "Y" panels rotate to fit with each other and also with the "X" panel. Notice how the slits in the seam edges tab-together and overlap, permitting the panels to flex and bow.
